Some seeds need intense heat
to germinate and so are seen
to grow only after a major fire,
a fire that apparently wipes
out all life, deeply scorching
the most ancient thick trunks.
Yet the rings tell us
the trees survive and even thrive
after such conflagration.
The forest returns to bloom
with underbrush cleared,
space and air for growing.
Such is the process I am doing
with old patterns gone in smoke,
yet this ancient trunk
is better for the clearing.
Now I can easily see all around
and the flame seared seeds
are beginning to sprout.
