Escape Velocity

Offspring

To leave again the velvet nest,
warm, feathered comfortable,
food provided and support,

where love is foundation
and you know someone has your back,
the cold realities of daily life blunted.

It takes some doing
I can tell you
to pack up and head out,

join the trek.
That’s where life is,
the hard knocks, the jostles

the insights, the Hallelujahs,
where the people are,
the relationships that test and teach

and years pass in complicated fullness.
Yes, all true.
But to leave the home, the nest

knowing how it is…
pulled nevertheless…
to choose freedom.
